It is located 4,400 km south of Hawaii, 7,900 km from Chile and 5,700 km from Australia. It is smaller than Japan. This island has a population of about 187,133 people. It is fewer than Japan. The indigenous Tahitians are of Polynesian ancestry comprising 70% of the population alongside European, East Asians and people of mixed heritage sometimes referred to as Demis. Most of the people live in downtown. Papeete is the capital. French is the only official language although Tahiti language is widely spoken.
